John Gregory was appointed as the head coach of Chennaiyan ahead of the 2017 season. He marked his first season in India with an ISL trophy as Chennaiyan defeated Bengaluru in the final. In contrast, however, Chennaiyan ended up finishing bottom of the table the next season. Gregory was retained by Chennaiyan for the 19-20 season, but they terminated his services mid-season after yet another disappointing start to the league campaign. Owen Coyle replaced him and took that same team to the finals that year.

3) Gerard Nus

Northeast United announced the hiring of the young Spanish manager as their head coach ahead of the 2020-21 season. Midway through the season when Northeast was 3 points short of a playoff spot, Nus was sacked by the management for unspecified reasons. In the 11 matches Nus coached, Northeast managed to draw six matches and win two. Khalid Jamil took over as interim coach and led the Highlanders to the semifinals.
