A look back at Bengaluru FC's remarkable journey 5 SuperCup 2018 1
2017-18 Season Super Cup Champions

In the upcoming season, Bengaluru FC was offered to play in thee Indian Super League. Bengaluru FC was reluctant to play in ISL as the league did not have the license to play in the Asian Competitions. ISL managed to get the license for AFC licensing before the start of the season. This made sure Bengaluru FC will be contesting in ISL in the 2017-18 season. With BFC being consistent with their seasons, their fan base increased year after year. The tickets sale increased year after year. West Block Blues made a massive impact in Indian Football. They made sure that their presence is known and their efforts were seen. Bengaluru FC’s media panel headed by Kunal Majgaonkar did an exceptional job by promoting the state’s language and culture on the social media handles. It was all coming hand in hand to make it a beautiful club. Painting the banner under the hot sun shows the love Bangaloreans had towards the club and preparing new chants every pre-season showcased it too

Roca made some major reinforcements before the 2017-18 season. Notably, the Venezuelan striker who used to play for Rayo Vallecano, Miku Fedor, was brought in. He was a quality player to watch. He notched in 14 goals in his first season. Only, Ferrán Corominas scored more goals than him in that season. Miku Fedor’s quality helped his team reach the ISL final.

The Blues got going in the 9th minute itself, their captain got the opener in the 9th minute. It didn’t take long for Chennaiyin to equalise though. They equalised in the 17th minute with a goal from Mailson Alves. Just before half time, Alves doubled the lead for the Supermachans. This left the entire stadium in shock. Chennaiyin continued to dominate the match and got the reward for their dominance, Raphael Augusto headed home the third goal in the 65th minute. Miku got a goal back but it was too late. The match was over by then.

The Super Cup took place shortly after that and the club had to put in a good performance if they were to retain the streak of a trophy every season. Bengaluru FC put some good performances and got them to the final to play East Bengal. They won it comfortably 4-1. Sunil Chhetri managed to score 6 goals in the competition. He was the top scorer in that competition. This was Albert Roca’s last season.

His assistant, Carles Cuadrat was set to take over for the next season. He knew exactly how this team works so he didn’t take much time to adjust. Bengaluru was deermined to go all in after missing out on the title last season. The hunger was still there going into the next season. Goa had a solid team and gave Bengaluru a run for their money. The Blues lost four games that season and drew four games. They ended up with 34 points. Goa also ended up with the same number of points but behind in head-to-head results. Bengaluru beat North East in their playoffs and Goa beat Mumbai in their playoffs. The final was evenly poised.

90 minutes of the game got over and the score was still 0-0. In the extra-time, Dimas Delgado’s corner was put inside the D. The corner was perfect and all it needed was a head to guide its way into the goal. Rahul Bheke headed that ball into the goal in the 117th minute to hand BFC their maiden ISL trophy.

They continued to do what they do best by winning 6 trophies in 6 years. Bengaluru FC added another star to the crest after winning that title. It could have been or should have been 7 titles in 7 years, but it didn’t because of a bad semifinal for them. They failed to hold onto all the leads they had throughout the tie. In the second leg, they took an early lead and gave it away again. This caused them the semifinal.

ISL 2018-19 Champions

This has been the journey of this beautiful club. They have been a pure joy to watch right from the start. They have had their fair shares of ups and downs and when they do go down they have their fans to lift them back up. When they are doing great, they have their fans to cheer them through. From just being established 7 years ago to having a tie-up with one of the top Scottish teams, Rangers FC, is something to be really proud of. The club is only going to move forward from here.
