A goal from Liston Colaco kept ATK Mohun Bagan in front against Mumbai City FC for the majority parts of the game but a late equalizer by Jorge Pereyra Diaz denied the Mariners its first win in the Durand Cup 2022 and also over the Islanders as the match ends with a 1-1 draw at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. From the start of the game, ATK Mohun Bagan have been showing their supremacy over Mumbai City FC. The first action of the game took place in the 2nd minute of the game when Liston Colaco made a run into the box and shot with his right foot.
Lachenpa missed the ball completely, but the ball comes off the goal post. The Mariners were dominating the game completely in the first half and were continuously assaulting the Islanders’ defense. In the 14th minute of the game, Kauko went for a shot on goal, but it flew off target. ATK Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith made a good save to deny Mumbai City FC an equalizer.
In the 57th minute, Sanjeev Stalin replaced Amey Ranawade as Des Buckingham looked for more options in its squad. Three minutes later Noguera tried to get the ball up the pitch, but Pogba comes to the team’s rescue with a last-minute challenge. In the 60th minute, Boumous made a run close to the Mumbai City box but is dispossessed of the ball eventually. In the follow-up, Boumous fouled Apuia in a rash challenge and got into the referee’s book with a yellow card.
In the 65th minute, Vishal Kaith got the ball into action with a goal kick and Liston made a back pass to Kiyan Nassiri who passed the ball to Manvir Singh, but the shot was saved by Lachenpa, but Lachenpa once again fails to collect the ball cleanly and the onrushing Liston almost had a tap-in goal and finally, Rostyn Griffiths cleared it away from harm’s way. Greg Stewart took a free kick but tried to loft the ball in the penalty box instead of going for a shot on target from distance. However, ATK Mohun Bagan cleared the ball away, out of danger.
ATK Mohun Bagan had three players at the back, and the focus was clearly on the brilliant passing, counter-attacking, and runs along the wings. In the 77th minute, Sanjeev Stalin floated a cross to the penalty box which Pereyra Diaz headed in and equalized the score for Mumbai City FC. Lenny Rodrigues replaced Hugo Boumous in the 80th minute as the Mariners get back on level terms.
In the 88th minute, Carl McHugh steals the ball off Noguera as the Spaniard is left on the ground appealing for a foul. Hnamte delivers a long cross for Manvir, who gets his head on the ball but fails to keep it on target. In the last minute of the game there was a chance for ATK Mohun Bagan to score the winner and Manvir and Kiyan got together on the left flank, but the final shot from Manvir Singh flies off target.
The conclusion of this game is that the Islanders are still undefeated against the Mariners in their six meeting in total and now the Green and Maroon Brigade are in serious trouble to qualify for the next round in the competition with only two matches still left to play.
The Mariners occupy the 3rd position on the points table. Meanwhile, the Islanders are at the top of the table just above the minnows Rajsthan United FC. The Mariners face Emami East Bengal in the much-awaited Kolkata Derby in their next game on 28th August, whereas Mumbai City will be up against Rajasthan United FC on August 29th.
