In surprising turn of events, Mohun Bagan Goalkeeper has decided to join arch rivals East Bengal.
Shankar impressed in the CFL for Bhwanipoor FC. He was signed by Mohun Bagan after his performances in the CFL. Initially Shankar didn’t got much playing time in Mohun Bagan. But in this season under Kibu Vicuna, he was their first choice goalkeeper.
Shankar never failed to impress in this season. He played vital role in Mohun Bagan’s successful season. Shankar was not only good behind the sticks but also played as 11th outfield player at times. This season, Mohun Bagan were building their attacks from the back. Shankar was composed whenever ball came to him.
Shankar played 14 matches in the Hero I League 2019-20. He kept 7 cleansheets. He conceded only 9 goals. Out of those 9, 4 were against Churchill Brothers. He saved one penalty as well. He had a save percentage of 80%.
As ATK and Mohun Bagan are going to merge, there will be many players who will be heading to new clubs. Shankar was one of the best Mohun Bagan player this season. But unfortunately because ATK already has Arindam who made some crucial saves in the ISL knockout matches and young Dheeraj Singh, it could have been difficult for Shankar to get much playing time.
Shankar has signed a 3 year deal with East Bengal. Jamshedpur FC were interested in signing him and made a lucrative offer but Shankar declined the offer and is all set guard posts of the red and gold army.
