Federico Gallego is set to sign a new contract extension with Northeast United. The Uruguayan midfielder played a major role for Northeast United to secure their first ISL playoff in 2018-19.
Fan favourite Federico Gallego is all set to sign a new contract that will keep him with the club till the end of the next season. This is going to be his third season in Northeast United colours.
The 30 year old attacking midfielder signed for the Guwahati-based outfit in the 2018-2019 season and had played a major role under then head coach Eelco Schattorie for their first playoff qualification.
Federico Gallego played in 20 matches in his debut season and had scored four goals and assisted another five. He suffered a major injury during their semi-final match against Bengaluru FC which kept him away from the team for the majority of the matches last season.
Federico Gallego, who played only 673 minutes last season was nowhere near his original form after his recovery. He had just two goals contribution last season in form of a goal and an assist. The new contract extension shows the faith that the management has for the midfielder.
Gallego spent most of his career with Uruguayan top division clubs before coming to ISL. He formed one of the best attacking partnership in the club history along with Bartholomew Ogbeche. This partnership had contributed 16 goals and created another 7 for Northeast United.
Northeast United had a season to forget last year under Croatian head coach Robert Jarni. They finished their season in the 9th position with just 2 wins and 8 draws. Jarni was sacked after 15 matches and Khalid Jamal was appointed as the interim head coach for the last 3 matches of the season.
The management is looking for a complete revamp of the squad this season. They have appointed 35 year old Spaniard Gerard Nus as the head coach for the upcoming season. Extension of Galego’s contract is going to be the first task for the newly appointed head coach.
