Gaurav Bora – Playing in Calcutta is a dream come true

-

Mohammedan SC, an undeniable cog of the holy trinity of Calcuttan and Indian Football, along with East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, became just the second club in history to earn promotion into the Indian Super League after winning the I-League in 2023-24.

Now that they are back alongside clubs with whom they have historically gone toe-to-toe, the Black Panthers appear keen on reinforcing their squad and making a statement in their maiden season in the first division of the new Indian domestic football structure.

Mohammedan are veritable giants in Indian football, having won the Calcutta Football League on fourteen occasions and the Durand and Rovers Cup plenty of times, and will be keen on making their mark in the ISL as well.

Towards that purpose, one of the biggest signings they made in the summer transfer window was that of former NorthEast United FC defender Gaurav Bora. The talented center-back is bound to add a lot of heft to the Black Panthers’ defense in the upcoming season and provide them with technical solidity.

The 26-year-old sat down with IFTWC recently and spoke about his move to Calcutta from Guwahati and his preparations for the season ahead. Also on the table were the former India Under-23 star’s experiences playing for NorthEast and Odisha FC, with whom he spent three seasons from 2019 to 2022.

Gaurav Bora

Tell us about your move to Mohammedan from NorthEast United FC. How does it feel?

I’m thrilled to have made the move to Mohammedan SC from NEUFC! It’s an incredible opportunity for me to grow as a player and be part of a team with such a rich history and passionate fan base.

The transition has been smooth, and I’m loving the new challenge. Leaving NEUFC was bittersweet, but I’m grateful for the experience and memories. Now, I’m fully focused on this new chapter and can’t wait to give my all for MSC!

Mohammedan were promoted to the ISL after winning the I-League last season. What kind of challenges do you feel you will have to face with a newly-promoted club? Do you think you are prepared for them?

Getting promoted to the ISL is a fantastic achievement for Mohammedan, and I’m honoured to be a part of this journey. However, I’m aware that this new chapter comes with its own set of challenges.

As for preparation, I believe we’ve been working hard as a team. Our coaching staff has been fantastic in guiding us.

How has your preparation for the new season been?

My preparation for the new season has been intense and focused. I’ve also been prioritizing my recovery and nutrition to ensure that I’m in the best possible shape.

What are the targets that you have set for yourself for the new season? What do you hope to achieve with Mohammedan?

For the new season, my personal goal is to contribute consistently to the team’s success. My ultimate dream is to represent my country, and I’m working hard towards that.

As for the team, we’re aiming to be competitive in every match, take one game at a time and work accordingly.

What are your expectations of playing in Calcutta – perhaps the home of Indian Football – in front of such a passionate fan base?

Playing in Calcutta, the Mecca of Indian football, is a dream come true! The city’s passion for the beautiful game is legendary, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. Playing in the city of joy is a privilege, and I’m determined to make the most of it.

Tell us a bit about what your experiences playing for Odisha and NorthEast United.

My time at Odisha FC and NEUFC were incredible chapters in my football journey. Both clubs taught me valuable lessons, helped me mature as a player, and prepared me for the next step in my career.

I’m grateful for the opportunities I have had and the people I met along the way. Those experiences have shaped me into the player I am today. And I’m extremely grateful and thankful for everything.

Gaurav Bora’s message to his loyal supporters in Assam and the Northeast

To my supporters in the Northeast, I want to say thank you. Thank you for your unwavering support, your energy, and your love. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to play for you.

You guys really made me feel special, and I’ll always cherish those memories.

As I move on to a new chapter, please know that you will always have a piece of my heart. Keep supporting the beautiful game like you always have.
