“I wanted to go and taste European football”- Gurpreet Singh Sandhu On his Wigan Athletic Stint

-

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu! The 2019 Arjuna Awardee, the wall of the Indian National Team. The man who has been successfully guarding the goal with his exceptional performances.

We at IFTWC were fortunate enough to have a live session with the National Team goalkeeper. It was an interactive session as we got to know a lot of things from the man himself. We asked him about his stint with Wigan Athletic. Although it did not really pan out, we wanted to know the exact reason for the same.

Revelation By Gurpreet Singh Sandhu

Here is what happened in the words of the man himself:

“It happened because I wanted to go and taste European football. I wanted to see if I am capable enough to go outside and play. 6-7 days with Wigan Athletic helped me open my eyes and made me realize something that I wanted to do. I wanted to come back to Europe.”

“Because I had a contractual obligation with East Bengal, I wasn’t able to join Wigan or possibly any other club in Europe. Even though I tried to convince the club to leave me, it was difficult as no club would want to lose his number one option. It was the pre-season in England when I went to Wigan.” -Gurpreet concluded

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu: First Indian to play Europa League

Gurpreet joined Stabæk Fotball, a Norwegian top tier football club in 2014. In doing so, he became the first Indian player to play in UEFA Europa League in 2016 when the club played its first qualifying round tie. He joined Bengaluru FC in 2017 and has been with them since then.

Playing in Europe has helped him grow better as a player and be the number one choice for both the club and country thereafter. We wish him all the best and more success in the coming days.
