NorthEast United‘s midfielder Hernan Santana is set to join Sichuan Jiuniu in the Chinese Second Division, IFTWC can confirm.

Sichuan Jiuniu, while playing in the third division of Chinese football, was bought by the City Football Group, and have since displayed their ambition to rise to the top of the Chinese football hierarchy by hiring tactician Sergio Lobera as their head coach from Mumbai City FC, another City club.

After spending four years managing in India, Lobera has now helped Sichuan with signing two quality players from the Indian Super League for their project. Hernan Santana, who won the domestic double with Mumbai under Lobera, is the second player to join Sichuan Jiuniu. The first player was Jorge Ortiz, FC Goa’s forward.

Hernan Santana was on loan from Sporting Gijon to Mumbai for the 2020/21 season. However, the midfielder’s stay at Mumbai was not extended, and NorthEast United FC signed him for the following season on a free transfer. The Highlanders finished second from bottom in the league table with just three points separating them from the bottom placed team.

Hernan’s versatility makes him an asset to any team, as the Spaniard can be used in midfield and can also slot into the backline. The 31-year-old will now be a part of a new project in China as he joins forces with former coach Sergio Lobera at Sichuan Jiuniu.
