Hero ISL 2022-2023 Matchweek 8 – Key takeaways

-

Hero ISL 2022-2023 forges on ahead into its 8th match week and brings the same excitement and intrigue as its opening week. This week was characterized by some great football that was seen from a majority of the teams. This week also featured floodlight failures and questionable decisions by the referees.

Floodlight failure fails to hinder Odisha win

ISL

The first match of the ISL match-week 8 was an electrifying one with both Odisha FC and Chennaiyin FC going neck and neck with each other. The first goal was given to Odisha as Vafa Hakhanameshi scored an own goal. Within a few minutes into the second half, Odisha was awarded a penalty which they scored giving them the lead. However, Chennaiyin was undaunted and Abdenasser El Khayati scored a much-needed goal in the second half.

This electrifying series of events was unfortunately interrupted by a floodlight failure in the 90th minute just as Chennaiyin was awarded a penalty. The match resumed shortly and El Khayati converted the penalty into a goal thus equalizing the score. The match seemed to be heading to a draw when a goal by Nandhakumar in the umpteenth moment sealed the victory for Odisha.

The match showed great football while some not-so-great moments as plenty of fouls were declared with Odisha getting two yellow cards. Chennaiyin FC needs to up their game and realize the potential of players like el Khayati who played well in the last match.

A questionable penalty decision tarnishes an otherwise predictable Mumbai Win

ISL

The second match of the week was between the ISL league toppers Mumbai City FC and NorthEast United FC who grace the bottom of the ladder. Early on, Mumbai City FC scored from a hotly debatable penalty. The foul took place outside the box but the referee awarded a penalty instead of a free kick. The rest of the match was akin to their stellar performance. Bipin scored a goal making it the third consecutive match in which he scored. Bipin also made an assist that was converted by Pereyra Diaz into a goal.

NorthEast got off to a good start. They made quite a few attempts and one of them found the back of the net. However, they were vastly outclassed by the superior and much more experienced Mumbai City FC team. They had equalized the score but could not hold on to it, leading to Mumbai City FC scoring two more goals.

Javi brace breaks Bengaluru FC’s losing streak

ISL

This week of the ISL saw Bengaluru FC break its string of losses after 4 weeks. Right from the get-go, Bengaluru showed marked improvement over the performance they had been showing so far. Their passing and shots showed greater quality and accuracy.

Javi Hernandez and Roy Krishna shone throughout the match. Although the latter did not score a goal he came close to scoring multiple times. Javi Hernandez scored both goals in the match. Bengaluru remained on the attack for the majority of the game. The second half showed FC Goa making a greater effort but they were not successful as Bengaluru maintained a clean sheet for the duration of the match.

FC Goa could not keep up with a Bengaluru team that has been having a poor run in this ISL season so far. They had a limited number of attempts on goal. Multiple attempts were made by FC Goa in the latter half of the game but none of their attempts found the back of the net. Edu Bedia came close but his goal was disallowed as it came moments after a handball. FC Goa’s defense and attacking need to improve.

Hyderabad Losses continue as ATK Mohun Bagan steals victory from them

ISL

ATK Mohun Bagan faced off against the winners of the last ISL season Hyderabad FC. Fans of both teams were treated to great football. Both sides worked especially hard to outdo the other, however, Hugo Boumous scored a quick goal in the 10th minute of the match and unknowingly sets the victor of the match in stone as the other side was unable to score another goal to change the outcome of the match.

ATK Mohun Bagan must be commended for holding on to a goal they scored early into the match. Hyderabad is an exceptional team but they were found lacking in that match however they are a team that won’t let a little setback sway them from their goal.

Lightning fast goal nets East Bengal 3-1 victory over Jamshedpur FC

ISL

East Bengal got off to a spectacular start. VP Suhair scored a lightning-fast goal around the 2-minute mark and determined the tone of the game as East Bengal would continue to dominate the remaining duration of the game. The next goal came from Cleiton Silva who scored in the 26th and 58th minute respectively. Mahesh Singh was instrumental in East Bengal’s victory as it was his assists that laid the groundwork for the goals scored by Silva. The duo rocked the match and left Jamshedpur struggling to gain the upper hand.

Jamshedpur struggled to score a goal from open play. They only scored one goal in the entire match and that came from a penalty. Chukwu and Jay Emerson had multiple opportunities and took multiple shots but they did not find the mark. Jamshedpur is a team with great potential and they showed it when they led the table in the previous installment of the ISL.
