5) I-League 2020/21 to witness a new format

I-League 2020/21 will witness a new format with each team playing the other team once in the first stage of the league. Post that, the 11 teams will be divided into two groups with the Group A consisting of the first six teams and Group B consisting of the remaining five teams. The groups will be announced in due course.

The teams will play each other in Group A and B respectively in a round-robin format. After the second stage, the tally of both the stages will be accumulated with the bottom placed team relegated to the I-League second division.

AIFF confirmed that if Sudeva Delhi FC and Indian Arrows finish at the bottom of the points table, they would be exempted from relegation. The team above them will be relegated to the lower division.

“The circumstances are obviously a little different this season due to the various COVID-19 restrictions. That is why we felt that bringing in such a format will not only give the teams a suitable number of matches, but also keep a low-risk factor for the players and officials in the Hero I-League,” said AIFF Leagues CEO Mr. Sunando Dhar. “I wish everyone the best for the new season. May the best team win.”
