Sreenidi Deccan FC have completed the signing of defensive midfielder Umashankar from Chennai City FC on a free transfer, IFTWC can confirm.
Umashankar will be the third Chennai City FC player to join Sreenidi after Vineeth Kumar Velmurugan and Sriram Bhoopati. The signing of Umashankar will increase the number of U-23 players in the Sreenidi squad to nine players.
With an aim to win the I-League in their debut season, SDFC is roping in several young players in order to have the right mix of youth players and I-League experienced foreigners in their roster. Umashankar can be a right fit for Sreenidi if groomed well in their world-class facilities under Durand Cup and Kerala Premier League winning coach Fernando Santiago Varela.
Umashankar had played only four games last season for Chennai City FC, and will be hoping to get more game time this season under coach Fernando Varela, who supported youngsters like Mayakkannan and Shibil in the past when he was the coach of Gokulam Kerala FC.
Despite coach Fernando’s preference for youngsters, Umashankar will have to work hard to play often as Sreenidi Deccan FC have already signed three top defensive midfielders in Phalguni Singh, Mayakkannan, and Shibin.
It will not be a surprise if Sreenidi wins the I-League in their debut season given the quailty of players they have. They are not only going to fight for the title but Sreenidi is also ready to show the strength of their academy players as they have promoted their U-18 player Sunil Bathala to the senior team among others. Sunil will become the first-ever Telugu player to play in the I-League once he takes the field for SDFC.
