In a thrilling encounter at the Fatorda Stadium, FC Goa edged out Punjab FC 2-1 in their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 match on November 6, securing back-to-back home victories. Goals from Armando Sadiku and Iker Guarrotxena propelled the Gaurs to victory, despite an early strike from Asmir Sulijic for Punjab FC.

The match saw an intense start, with Punjab FC drawing first blood in the 13th minute. Asmir Sulijic, capitalizing on a sharp cross from Nihal Sudheesh, fired a precise right-footed shot from the center of the box to put the Shers ahead 1-0. However, FC Goa quickly responded.

Just nine minutes later, Sadiku leveled the score with a clinical right-footed finish, finding the bottom left corner after a perfect through-ball from Guarrotxena. The teams entered halftime tied 1-1.

The decisive moment came just four minutes into the second half when Guarrotxena, FC Goa’s talisman, found the back of the net with a swift left-footed strike from close range, securing a 2-1 lead for the home side. His goal proved to be the match-winner, as both defenses held firm for the remainder of the game, including seven minutes of injury time, where the Gaurs successfully fended off Punjab FC’s attempts to find an equalizer.

This victory was particularly sweet for FC Goa, coming hot on the heels of their 3-0 dismantling of Bengaluru FC, which ended their opponent’s unbeaten streak. With this win, the Gaurs carried their strong form forward, solidifying their third-place position in the league standings with 12 points from eight matches (three wins, three draws, and two losses).

For Punjab FC, it was a tough result to swallow. After a strong run of four wins in five matches, this defeat saw them drop to fourth place in the standings. Despite the early lead, they struggled to maintain their momentum and couldn’t break through FC Goa’s resilient defense in the second half.Looking ahead, FC Goa will travel to Kochi to face Kerala Blasters on November 28, while Punjab FC will aim to bounce back against NorthEast United on November 23.This contest not only highlighted FC Goa’s resilience and form but also showcased their growing confidence, as they continue to climb the ISL table with eyes firmly set on a top spot.
