Delhi FC‘s captain Anwar Ali has signed a contract with FC Goa which will allow him to play for the club from January 2022. The centre-back was one of the best performers for hosts India in the U17 FIFA World Cup and has been on the radar of many big clubs in his country since his youth days.
Anwar Ali Jr. began his career playing for Minerva Punjab’s youth teams. Having been one of the more consistent players in his age group, he was a regular for the Indian Arrows in the 2017 season and also the 2018-19 season when he was on loan from his new club Mumbai City FC.
In 2019, he was diagnosed with a rare heart condition which sidelined him from professional football. He was recently permitted to return to football and found some much-needed minutes with Delhi FC, where his talent shone through yet again.
In the recently concluded I-League 2nd Division, the weapons-grade centre-half scored 4 goals, the most in the tournament. It was only a matter of time that the top clubs from the ISL, India’s premier footballing competition, would start vying for his signature. Goa made their move and convinced the youngster of a healthy and competitive future with them. Anwar Ali is now a Gaur.
