Uruguayan midfielder Fede Gallego will commit his future to Northeast United FC after signing a new contract, IFTWC can confirm.
Gallego had tried to find his luck abroad and had been in talks with Odisha FC and another ISL club but chose to stay with The Highlanders for the 2021/22 season.
For the past three seasons, Gallego has been an integral member of Northeast United FC. He scored four goals and four assists in his debut season at the club before injuries derailed his 19/20 season. He only played seven games that year and scored one goal and one assist. The 31-year-old returned strong last season, scoring four goals and assisting six times while creating 14 big chances and leading Northeast United to a third-place finish in the ISL group stage. Despite their efforts, the Highlanders were beaten 3-2 on aggregate in the semifinals by ATK Mohun Bagan, thus bowing out of the knock-out stages.
By dedicating his future to Northeast, Gallego has ended all speculation about his next club. The Highlanders have signed a group of players which includes Mathias Coureur, Joe Zoherilana, Jestin George, Mohammad Irshad, and Tondonba Singh till now. Khalid Jamil is expected to remain as their head coach as well. Khassa Camara has signed a contract extension with the club, and Deshorn Brown is expected to follow suit.
The club has lost three important players from last season, Dylan Fox, Ashutosh Mehta, and Lalengmawia Apuia, who have joined FC Goa, ATK Mohun Bagan, and Mumbai City FC respectively. Northeast United still has key positions to fill in the transfer market, so it remains to be seen how they proceed further.
