The current ISL Shield winners, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, have secured the signature of Scottish midfielder Greg Stewart on a year-long deal. The player is expected to join the camp for pre-season on the 29th of this month.
Stewart is making his second return to India after leaving mid-season during the previous ISL campaign to join Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock FC. Stewart is a familiar face in Indian football, having won the prestigious ISL Shield title first with Jamshedpur FC and then with Mumbai City FC in two consecutive seasons.
He was awarded Hero of the League in the 2021-22 season with 20 goal contributions to his name. His dominance persisted when he made the switch to CFG-owned Mumbai City FC, where he donned their jersey for two years.
Stewart comes from the ranks of Rangers and Hearts’ youth setups during the period of 2007-2010. Later, he moved to multiple under-age category teams like Falkirk and Stirling Albion. His senior professional debut happened with Cowdenbeath, where he spent four years of his career and made his debut in the Scottish First Division. He later moved to Dundee FC and then to English second-tier club Birmingham City.
He was picked up by Scottish top side Aberdeen FC and later donned the jersey for Kilmarnock and Rangers, from where he was lured by Owen Coyle’s Jamshedpur FC.
Now returning to play for rival side Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Stewart’s re-entry into Indian football promises to be an exciting display, especially with the likes of Cummings and Petratos by his side, led by Spanish tactician Jose Molina. A player of his quality combined with the proven skills of Cummings will be a significant threat for every opposition defense to contend with.
