The Islanders have completed the signing of Aussie striker David Williams from ATK Mohun Bagan, IFTWC can confirm. A source tracking the development told IFTWC, “ATK Mohun Bagan striker David Williams has signed for Mumbai City FC. Williams has penned a one-year deal with the Islanders.”
David Williams becomes the second foreign signing for Mumbai City FC for the next season. The Australian forward who presently plays for the Mariners has penned down a one-year contract with the Islanders.
Born in Brisbane, Australia – David Williams has played his youth football at the Queensland Academy of Sport before making his professional debut for Queensland Roar. Williams has played for several A-League clubs including Queensland Roar, North Queensland Fury, Sydney FC, Melbourne City FC, and Wellington Phoenix.
David Williams has also played in Europe for Danish Superliga (Denmark) club Brøndby and NB I (Hungary) club Haladás. He also spent time in training with Belgian club Club Brugge, and Premier League club Liverpool FC in his early years.
David Williams signed for ATK FC in the 2019-20 Indian Super League season. He joined the team along with his fellow phoenix player Roy Krishna. Krishna and Williams had built a deadly combination up front and were a thorn to the opposition defense. Their solid partnership continued at ATK Mohun Bagan FC (founded in 2020 with the merger between ATK FC and Mohun Bagan Athletic club) in the 2020-21 season as well.
In total, David Williams has appeared in 62 ISL matches and scored 22 goals while also assisting 9 goals. The Indigenous Australian who has also appeared for the Socceroos U-17 Category, U-20 Category, and also U-23 Category has scored a total of 24 goals in 37 matches. Williams was also called up to the Australia senior national team on two occasions in the past.
Having signed David Williams, Mumbai City FC have strengthened their attack and will have more options up front with his addition. Williams is likely to be a key figure under coach Des Buckingham who himself was a former Wellington Phoenix manager.
David Williams can be equally effective from the start of the game or even if he comes as a substitute late in the game as was the case in his past endeavors with the Mariners. A fox in the box, David can play in various positions in attack as well as midfield depending upon the strategy of the coach.
