ISL – RoundGlass Punjab signs Ricky Shabong

-

Ricky Shabong, the 20-year-old young prospect has signed for the newly promoted side in ISL, Roundglass Punjab FC, IFTWC can confirm.

Ricky Shabong is a 20-year-old defensive midfielder who has been one of the most consistent players in the under-age categories of the National team. Punjab FC, who recently gained promotion to Hero ISL by winning the previous I-league is very active in the transfer market luring multiple players to their force. Ricky is one of the new names on the list alongside Nikhil Prabhu and Kingslee Fernandes as reported earlier.

The Meghalaya-born midfielder started his youth career with Royal Wahingdoh where he was selected to the U-14 national team. His name came into the limelight after he started all four games of the campaign for the U-16 national team and reached the quarter-finals of the AFC U-16 Championship in 2018 eventually losing out to South Korea.

He then went on to pen down a contract with the now-defunct Indian Arrows side where he managed to continue his stellar display of outstanding defensive coverage and offensive awareness. He donned the jersey of Indian Arrows 28 times in the 2019-2021 season debuting against Gokulam Kerala FC starting all games in his initial I-League campaign completing full minutes the whole season.

His impressive stint with the Indian Arrows side was spotted by ISL side, ATK Mohun Bagan, now, Mohun Bagan Super Giant. He was loaned out to I-league side Rajasthan United FC where he continued his imposing consistency starting all 17 games and assisting the side two times that season. But things didn’t go well for the young lad after the loan period because he only got 46 minutes of game time with the ISL side.

Now he is set to embark on his new journey with the newly promoted ISL side Roundglass Punjab. A player like Ricky will only benefit RoundGlass Punjab for the betterment of the squad by infusing fresh young blood with adequate experience in Indian football alongside other signings done by the side. It is also a chance for the young lad to show his worth and get the attention of the Indian football fraternity.
