Kerala Blasters Today Officially Announced the Signing of left back Denechandra Meitei from I-League Side Trau FC.
Denechandra Meitei started his journey at Mohun Bagan academy. After one year with the mariners, he decided to join sambhalpur academy in Orissa. He later joined Pune FC academy. With this switch, things started to fall in place for the Manipuri fullback as he won the U-19 I-League title twice.
In 2013, Meitei made his professional debut for Pune FC against his former club Mohun Bagan AC. Although Meitei had a decent run with Pune FC U-19 side, he failed to fetch playing time for Pune FC’s senior team. Meitei’s breakthrough season came in 2017 when he joined Goan outift Churchill Brothers. He made 15 appearances for Churchill Brothers before making a move to NEROCA FC. An year later, Meitei signed for Neroca’s arch rivals TRAU FC. He made 12 appearance for the newly promoted side last season in the I-League.
“It has always been a dream to be a part of a prestigious league like the ISL and I am looking forward to playing in the upcoming season with Kerala Blasters. I hope to contribute to the success of the team with the best of my abilities. The club has a great fan base that is well renowned across the country and I am very excited to play for them.” Said Denechandra Meitei on his announcement as a KBFC player.
“We are very happy to welcome Denechandra Meitei to the squad. He is a very talented and skilful player at his position. Being a part of Kerala Blasters is a moment of pride, but a huge responsibility too. I hope to see him put in all efforts and hard work to achieve the goals of the team. Wishing him all the very best to be motivated and ready for the challenges this season.”, says Karolis Skinkys, Sporting Director, Kerala Blasters FC.
Kerala Blasters completed the deal in a bid to provide competition to Jessel Carneiro who recently penned down a three year contract extension with the club. Blasters have remained active in the market and have already struck deals with multiple domestic players like Northeast United midfielder Lalthathanga Khawlring (Putiea), Hyderabad FC midfielder Rohit Kumar and Indian Arrows duo Givson Singh and Prabhsukhan Gill. As per reports, Meitei’s TRAU FC teammate Sandeep Singh is also all set to join the Kochi based side for the upcoming edition of the Indian Super League.
From the 2020-21 season, the ISL clubs are getting the freedom to expand their squad size upto 35 players. With this new squad rule set to be implemented, the clubs now have increased their focus towards roping in adequate backups for their first team players. Currently Meitei’s squad role at Kerala Blasters is expected to be a backup for Jessel. It remains to be seen whether the Manipuri defender can exceed expectations and break into the Kerala Blasters starting eleven.
