5. United Sikkim
United Sikkim had a forgettable debut season in the I-League in 2012-13 which saw them get relegated. The Baichung Bhutia owned Sikkim based club, was able to secure only 15 points from 26 games. The club had 2 wins, 9 draws and 15 defeats in their debut campaign. Among their defeats was a famous 10-1 thrashing at the hands of United SC (then Prayag United) at the Salt Lake stadium. This heavy defeat resulted in the appointment Baichung Bhutia as the coach and former coach Philippe De Ridder moving to the position of Football Director of United Sikkim. Since the relegation, United Sikkim played in the local league before participating in the second division of the I-League from 2018-19.
Over the years, the I-League has seen the relegation of some historic clubs and many of these clubs have fought their way back into the league after setbacks. Indian football fans would be hoping for more consistency in relegation and promotion, because the emotions that fans experience during these ups’ and downs’ of relegation and promotion is what makes football special.
