Leeds United is undoubtedly one of the biggest clubs in England. The club has a massive fanbase, and after 14 years of second division football, are finally back to the Premier League.
The internet has flooded with fans of Leeds United and neutrals expressing their happiness over the club’s promotion. After missing out on promotion in the 2018-19 season, Marcelo Bielsa’s boys have won the EFL Championship and will play in the Premier League next season.
The 2003-04 season was the last time Leeds were playing in the top league. They had a disastrous season, and it resulted in the club being relegated. They finished 19th on the table with just 33 points to their name. Funnily enough, the other two clubs who got relegated were Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers(Wolves), who are now competing for a European spot.
Coming to the surprising part, there were three people involved with Leeds United that season who made their way to the Indian Super League later on in their career!
Peter Reid
Peter Reid was the coach of Leeds United for almost a whole year. In March 2003, he was appointed as the interim coach while the club was fighting for survival in the 2002-03 season. He managed to keep Leeds in the Premier League for another season and the club gave him a permanent role.
However, the 2003-04 didn’t go well for Reid. After a bad start to the league, Reid was sacked in November 2003 after his team lost 6-1 to Portsmouth. Reid coached Coventry City, Thailand National Team and Plymouth Argyle in the space of 10 years before coming to the Indian Super League.
The Indian Super League was started in 2014, and Reid was appointed as the coach of Mumbai City FC in the inaugural year. Reid had an unsuccessful season with the Islanders as the team managed to win just 4 matches out of 14, finishing second last on the table at 7th.
He was replaced by Nicolas Anelka as the player-manager in the following season.
