JERMAINE PENNANT
A lesser known name among the 5 Liverpool players to have plied their trade in the ISL, Jermaine played in the inaugural season of the ISL for the now defunct FC Pune City and made a total of 7 appearances for them. Much was expected of him when he came to India as he was playing for Stoke City in the Premier League that time but he failed to make a mark in the ISL, failing to register a goal or an assist.
Before coming to India, he had played more than 200 matches in the Premier League. He played for a number of clubs including Arsenal, Leeds United, Birmingham City and obviously Liverpool. After his short stint in India, he went on to join Wigan Athletic playing in the Championship. He also played for the Tampines Rovers in the Afc Cup before retiring at Bury, the same club where Baichung Bhutia piled his trade once upon a time.
That brings us to the end of our list of players who had played for Liverpool before coming to India. We surely hope that by the time Liverpool win the Premier League again, there will be a lot more inflow of Liverpool players coming to India as Football in India grows and grows with every passing year. And we will surely wait for the day when an Indian footballer plays for Liverpool. Hope the day comes soon.
