Mohun Bagan is in advanced talks with Australian World Cupper Jason Cummings, IFTWC can confirm. A source following the developments said, “Mohun Bagan has held advanced talks with Jason Cummings. The Mariners have held meetings with his agent in the past couple of weeks. It is not a done deal yet but talks are progressing positively.”
With sixteen goals and four assists under his belt, Cummings presently holds the second-highest scorer position in the ongoing A-League. The 27-year-old began his senior career in 2013 with Scottish club Hibernian, where he scored an impressive 71 goals in 149 appearances. Later, in 2017, he joined English Championship outfit Nottingham Forest. However, after a single season with Forest, Cummings spent the rest of his time on loan moves to Rangers, Peterborough, and Luton Town before inking a permanent contract with Shrewsbury Town.

Cummings returned to Scotland after 48 games for Shrewsbury and joined Dundee FC. However, he was released by the club a year later, allegedly after being deemed unfit for training. The 27-year-old scored 14 goals in 36 games for Dundee. Subsequently, he moved back to Australia and signed with Central Coast Mariners in January, where he has been in very fine form. In his first season at the club, he scored ten goals and provided six assists, and he has continued that impressive form this season.
Known as “Cumdog”, Cummings’ outstanding performances in the A-League earned him a place in the Australian World Cup squad in Qatar. Prior to the tournament, Cummings had only played for Australia once, scoring his first international goal in a friendly match against New Zealand. He had also played twice for the Scotland national team, debuting against Netherlands. His only appearance in the World Cup was as a substitute in a 4-1 defeat to France. Cummings was also a member of the Socceroos squad for the friendly matches against Ecuador in March this year.

Mohun Bagan’s pursuit of Cummings signals their intention to make a statement in the transfer market. Although possessing a formidable team, the club has been lacking a dynamic striker that can elevate their game to new heights. With Dimitri Petratos, who was indisputably their top performer in the league this season, already in their ranks, Mohun Bagan wouldn’t mind pairing him with another formidable Australian World Cupper.
The current focus for Juan Ferrando’s men is on winning the Super Cup trophy in Kerala, following their triumph in the ISL Playoffs this season. With Cummings’ proven goal-scoring ability and experience playing at the highest level, he is poised to enter his prime footballing years and could very well be the missing piece that would propel Mohun Bagan to unprecedented levels in Indian football.
