Mumbai City FC lock horns with ATK Mohun Bagan tonight at Fatorda Stadium in Goa, aiming to win the prestigious ISL trophy.
Mumbai City FC and ATK Mohun Bagan both finished the league stage on 40 points each, but the silverware was handed to the Islanders as they had been better in head-to-head record against Mariners in the league stage matches. With the silverware, Mumbai made their place in Asia’s prolific club competition AFC Champions League 2022.
Since the City Football group took-over Mumbai City FC, with no doubt, it was very clear even before the season started that the team will make some great signings and will aim for the shield as well as the ISL trophy. On the other hand, leading ATK to the title last year, Antonio Lopez Habas continued this year too with the merged entity ATK Mohun Bagan with the same counter-attacking style of play.
Mumbai City FC made their way to the finals after they beat their arch-rivals FC Goa in the semifinals on penalties.
The final clash between the Islanders and Mariners will be interesting to watch out for, as surely the fans will be on the edge of their seats enjoying super moments of the match.
“They are a great team. We don’t have any specific plans for the finals and will play with our preferred style of play,” said the head-coach Sergio Lobera in pre-match presser.
“The pre-season was short. We had new players into the squad and it took us some time to settle at starting of the league. I am very happy that the City Football Group and the management kept supporting us, hence we have achieved our targets till now,” admitted Lobera.

Meanwhile, ATK Mohun Bagan faced NorthEast United, defeating them by a 2-1 scoreline. But, looking back to the previous league stage record of ATK Mohun Bagan against Mumbai City FC, the Marines lost 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.
“We will have a balanced approach to the game. Every match is different and we need to adapt to different situations. We are ready for any tactical circumstances,” said Antonio Habas.
“We have several players with good experience of playing in ISL finals, Mumbai City FC don’t. So, this is the thing which will benefit us for sure. But, Sergio Lobera is a great coach and who has a style of play which is admired by all,” Habas commented.
Mandar Rao Dessai of Mumbai City FC will miss the match due to suspension. ATK Mohun Bagan’s striker Roy Krishna is the leading joint top-scorer of the league alongside FC Goa’s Igor Angulo. The Golden boot will be bagged by Krishna if he scores a goal against the Islanders.
