Experienced midfielder Romain Philippoteaux has signed a 2-year-contract with NorthEast United FC ahead of the 2022/23 ISL season. The 34-year-old last plied his trade for Dijon FCO in the French 2nd Division – Ligue 2.
Romain is a high-profile signing for the Highlanders on deadline day. He has over 100 appearances in the Ligue 1, the French top flight. He has generally operated as a wide midfielder in his career spanning 10 seasons.
Philippoteaux’s prior experience
He signed for Dijon in 2013 and went on to play for the club for 3 seasons. His first exposure to Ligue 1 came when he signed for Lorient in 2015. He scored 4 goals for them in 76 appearances. In 2017, he signed for Auxerre and had a fabulous 2017/18 season. He scored 11 goals and recorded 4 assists in the Ligue 2. After stints with Nimes and Brest, he re-signed for Dijon ahead of the 2021/22 season.
Philippoteaux is a versatile player, having played in both wings across his career. His silky footwork has the potential to leave defenses in disarray.
Marco Balbul has a very talented winger at his disposal and will relish the opportunity to coach him. Philippoteaux can become a success in the ISL if he communicates well with his new teammates on the pitch, as it is his first foray outside his home country in his career.
