As reported by IFTWC earlier, Joni Kauko has officially signed for ATK Mohun Bagan. After a successful Euro 2020 campaign, the Finnish midfielder has penned a 2-year contract with the Mariners.
ISL – ATK Mohun Bagan sign Finland international Joni Kauko
Kauko made three appearances for Finland at the Euros, all from the bench. Unfortunately, his team was eliminated after consecutive defeats to Belgium and Russia. He has captained Finland’s U21 national team on the international stage and played for Finnish club Inter Turku, winning the Finnish League Cup in 2008. The Esbjerg fB midfielder’s contract expired last month, and he chose not to renew it.
ATK Mohunbagan had announced the departure of Spanish midfielder Javi Hernandez a few days back and have acted quickly to find a replacement in the form of Joni Kauko. The 30-year-old can be defined as a strong and physical midfielder. He likes to keep possession of the ball and taking shots from outside the box. A player of his profile will be a valuable addition to Habas’s side given their lack of attacking threats from the midfield last season.
After losing out on both the ISL Shield and the Trophy last season, ATK Mohunbagan has already started their preparations for the 2021-22 edition, signing talented youngster Liston Colaco for a whopping transfer fee, Deepak Tangri from Chennaiyin FC, and goalkeeper Amrinder Singh from rivals Mumbai City FC.
