Kerala Blasters have finally announced the much awaited signing of Nishu Kumar from Bengaluru FC.The news was already confirmed by Parth Jindal- the owner of Bengaluru FC a few days ago and an official word was imminent sooner than later.

Nishu Kumar is one of the brightest young prospects in Indian football at the moment. He started his career with the Chandigarh Football academy and went on to join the AIFF Elite Academy after impressing in a talent hunt competition. In 2015 , he was signed by Bengaluru FC where he started his top-flight career.

Primarily a right back, Nishu Kumar is flexible and can play in a variety of positions. For almost the entirety of his BFC career, he piled his trade as a left back. Apart from playing in the full back positions, he can play further up front on the wings or as a defensive midfielder.

Despite playing as a full back, Nishu Kumar has a knack of scoring goals and has a great long ranger. He has scored six goals in his career so far, which is pretty good considering his playing position.

Nishu has represented India at the junior levels as well as making his debut for the senior team in a friendly against Jordan. Playing an unfamiliar role of a right midfielder, he scored India’s only goal of the match.

Nishu Kumar has signed for the Kerala Blasters as a free agent. His contract runs for 4 years during which he would get a hefty amount as his salary, almost double of what he was getting at BFC. According to reports, he might make a sum of Rs 5 crores in 4 years.

This is what the player had to say regarding his new move-

“In this footballing journey, I am all set to embrace a new challenge, being a part of Kerala Blasters FC. I will give my best for the club, hoping to win many trophies together and bring joy to all the supporters who have been there with the club throughout these years. I am looking forward to playing in front of the passionate Kerala Blasters fans who have forever been loud, proud and the heartbeat of the club in God’s own country. Inni Yennum Yellow!” says a thrilled Nishu Kumar on joining Kerala Blasters.

Kerala Blasters FC Sporting Director, Karolis Skinkys said “I would like to congratulate Nishu on joining the club. I’m positive that he will add value to our team with his quality and effort. Nishu is an ambitious youngster looking to achieve greater heights for himself and the club. I am looking forward to guiding him in realizing his ambition and in his position, become a preferred choice in the National team.  I’m proud and very happy to have him in our team”.

Nishu Kumar had a terrific last season for Bengaluru FC where he impressed one and all with his performances day in-day out. He made a total of 20 appearances in the ISL and the AFC CUP combined, scoring one beautiful goal against Hyderabad FC. He was a fan favourite at the Kanteerava and BFC owner Parth Jindal said the following words about him:

IT’S A HUGE LOSS FOR BFC THAT HE IS NO LONGER WITH US ANYMORE. HE GOT AN INCREDIBLE OFFER FROM KERALA BLASTERS. WE TRIED OUR BEST AND I REALLY WENT AS FAR AS I COULD GO BUT HE DECIDED NOT TO CONTINUE AND MOVE ON. “

Kerala Blasters seem to be doing a major overhaul in the squad. The club has released most of their foreigners from the last campaign while Sandesh Jhingan also left the club. It has also been rumoured that Mohammad Rakip is on the verge of joining Mumbai City FC. This opens up a huge slot at the right back position. And this is exactly where Nishu comes into play. Primarily right footed, that right back position comes naturally to him, and will suit his game even more than the left back position he played at BFC. Kibu Vicuna’s attacking philosophy will suit Nishu style of play and you can expect him bombarding down the wings and setting the stage on fire.

KERALA CAN EXPECT MORE SUCH BELTERS FROM NISHU IN THE FUTURE

In spite of being just twenty-two, Nishu has already played 94 matches in top flight football, which includes the I-league, ISL and the AFC Cup. Considering his age, there is still a lot of time left for him to develop into an even better player. We have already seen Kibu putting his faith on youngsters and if Nongdamba Naorem’s example is anything to go by, Nishu Kumar and Kibu might just be a match made in heaven. One thing for sure- Kerala fans are in for an absolute treat.
