Pep Guardiola congratulates Mumbai City FC for winning the ISL shield and wishes them all the best for the playoffs

Mumbai City FC has had a marvelous season so far, winning the ISL shield and qualifying for the AFC Champions League by finishing top in the ISL table. Sergio Lobera’s side beat ATK Mohun Bagan this Sunday to finish on top of the table with 40 points after registering 12 wins 4 draws and 4 losses from their 20 games. Mumbai City FC managed to score 35 goals with a goal difference of 17 which was the highest this season by any team in the Indian Super League.

Earlier last year before the start of the 2020/21 season, Mumbai City FC confirmed the partnership with the City Football Group. CFG bought a majority stake in the club (65%) alongside existing shareholders Ranbir Kapoor and Bimal Parekh who now own combined shares of 35%. The CFG also owns majority stakes in top clubs like Manchester City, New York City, Melbourne City FC, and others. After the CFG took over, the Islanders have brought in major changes to the squad including the coach. MCFC brought Sergio Lobera as their new coach and made some huge signings, such as Adam le Fondre who is the second-highest valuable player in the ISL. Other than changes in the squad, MCFC has also bagged a long-term kit deal with Puma.

Pep Guardiola was recently asked about Mumbai City FC in a press conference and this is what he had to say,

“Incredible success. It is part of the CFG family. Now comes the play-off. Hopefully, they can do well. Congratulations to all the people. Every league is tricky and when you win it is well deserved.”

The CFG aims to develop the future of Indian Football and the potential of Mumbai City FC in the future. The chairman of CFG also stated that he believes the deal will deliver transformative benefits to Mumbai City FC, City Football Group, and Indian Football as a whole.
