Ever since the inception of Indian Super League, North East United FC have struggled to feature in the tournament’s playoff matches regularly. During 2018-19 season of Hero Indian Super League, the team managed to get into the semi-final stages of the competition only to see their remarkable run ended by mighty Bengaluru FC who later on became the eventual champions. However, for the upcoming Indian Super league season, the Highlanders have appointed Spaniard Gerard Nus as their new manager. While Nus may be a new name to Indian football but he is not a brand new face when it comes to some of the players who played in the league. Here in this article, we take a look at a few players who have to spend their time under Gerard Nus during course of their career.
- Miku
Nicolás Ladislao Fedor Flores , commonly known as Miku, is a Venezuelan professional footballer who plays for Spanish club Deportivo de La Coruña as a striker. Miku is a well-known name to Indian football. The former Getafe player played two season of Indian Super League with Bengaluru FC. During his time with the club, Miku played almost 32 matches where he scored 20 goals for the Bengaluru-based side. North East United FC’s manager Gerard Nus worked as a Sporting director of La Liga side Rayo Vallecano back in 2016. Miku was a part of the Rayo Vallecano’s squad for 2016-17 La Liga season and he was a regular starter in the club’s playing XI.
2. Juanan
The Bengaluru FC center-back was a part of Rayo Oklahoma’s squad during 2015-16 season and left the club shortly after Nus joined them as a manager. The former Fortuna Düsseldorf player played 7 matches during his time with the Rayo Oklahoma side and later joined Bengaluru FC where he went on to play four seasons of Indian football. Juanan is one of the most experienced players in the Bengaluru FC squad in the present day. Although Juanan and Gerard Nus did not have many interactions but it will be fair enough to say that both of them came together in a certain part of their career.
3. David Williams
The ATK-Mohun Bagan attacker was a pivotal member of ATK’s last season’s Indian Super League winning squad. The Aussie made 15 appearances for the Kolkata based side during last season’s league stages and contributed to team’s performances with 5 goals and 4 assists. The Brisbane born forward has also represented Socceroos in two matches at the senior international stage. David Williams first came in touch with Gerard Nus during his time with the A-league based side Melbourne Hearts. David Williams joined Melbourne Hearts team during the start of 2010-11 season and stayed with the team for almost four seasons. David Williams was an instrumental player for the Melbourne based side when Gerard Nus joined the team as assistant manager in 2013-14 season. Nus worked as an assistant manager to Aussie gaffer John Aloisi and Dutch manager Jon Van ’t Schip during his time with the Melbourne Hearts team.
4. Asamoah Gyan
The former North East United FC forward was important member of Ghana National Football team during his career. He is the highest scorer and player with the most number of international caps for Ghana. Gyan joined North East United FC squad during last season and stayed with the club for almost five months. The Ghanaian legend played 8 matches for the Highlanders last season where he scored 4 goals and also provided one assists. One of the major achievements of Gerard Nus’s career was his time with Ghana national football team as an assistant manager. Gerard Nus worked under Avram Grant as an assistant manager of Ghana national team for three years starting his tenure from December 2014. It was during this time that Gyan came in touch with Gerard Nus and now Nus will be leading his former club as a manager.
