The Mariners are set to make the most significant move of the transfer window yet as Indian National Team defender Sandesh Jhingan is on the verge of making a comeback to the top tier of Indian Football.
Last season, Sandesh left ATK Mohun Bagan to sign for the Croatian top division club HNK Sibenik but had a tough time getting playing time due to injuries and the stiff competition level for the starting XI.
“Sandesh Jhingan has agreed terms with ATK Mohun Bagan to make a comeback in January. The move is subject to some final paperwork,” said a source tracking the developments.
Sandesh had an incredible stint with ATK Mohun Bagan in the past. The Indian National team defender had a solid partnership with Tiri to ensure a strong defense for the Mariners. He played 22 matches for them, making 119 clearances and 26 interventions in the spell with them in which the team conceded only 15 goals, the fewest goals conceded by any team last season. He was also a weapon from set-pieces with his staggering height.
Jhingan sustained a calf injury during his spell at HNK Sibenik and has returned to India for his recovery. On the other hand, the Mariners were keen to reinforce their shaky defense. When the opportunity came in the January transfer window, both parties didn’t waste much time and have agreed to the completion of the deal. Sandesh Jhingan will undergo fitness tests before completing the move.
