The league is producing many new talents recently

Our pick for the second position, the league called the first division began in 1951. Conselho de Desportos were the league organizers until the 1958-59 season. In 1959, the Goa Football Association established and conducted the league from that season onward. There was no senior league until the 1968-69 season. Thus, the GFA in 1969-70 season introduced the Senior Division League which became the topmost of division football. Later, the league abandoned. In 1977 the Goa Football Association introduced the Super league from the 1977-78 season. Salgaocar Sports Club clinched the title that season.

With the game developing at a fast pace globally, the GFA decided to take the game to a higher level. Thus, Goa became the first state in the country to get the status of the professional game and it is the only professional status to date. The first professional league launched in the 1998-99 season with the top 5 teams of the super league. The league expanded to 6 teams in the 2000-01 season and later to 8 teams from the 2002-03 season. In 2011 the GFA announced the league with 10 teams under a new format. Salgaocar is the most successful team in league history. The other successful clubs from Goa are Sporting Goa, Churchill Brothers, Dempo, and FC Goa respectively. The league is producing good talents in recent years and it’s a matter of time when the national team will have players from Goa taking the field.
