Hailing from West Bengal, Subrata Paul embarked on his football journey in 2004 with Mohun Bagan, immediately after completing his tenure at the Tata Football Academy in Jamshedpur. Since then, he has etched his name among India’s football luminaries. In 2007, Paul switched allegiance to East Bengal FC, becoming a linchpin for the Red and Gold Brigade and earning the distinction of the best goalkeeper in the I-League that same year. His journey through the I-League included stints with notable clubs such as Pune FC, Prayag United, and Rangdajied United.

Paul’s national presence was equally impactful, representing India across all age groups. His breakthrough came with the Under-23 team during the Pre-Olympic qualifiers, where his heroics in a pivotal penalty shootout against Myanmar secured India’s qualification for the Group stage. This achievement marked his ascent to the senior India side in 2007.

The recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award, Paul amassed 67 appearances for the national team. Notably, he contributed to India’s triumphs in the Nehru Cup of 2007 and 2009, showcasing his instrumental role in the country’s football successes. Subrata Paul marked his entry into the Indian Super League (ISL) in 2014 with Mumbai City FC during its inaugural season. His goalkeeping prowess was further exemplified by making 269 saves, ranking him fourth in the all-time highest saves in ISL history.

After a two-season stint with Mumbai City FC, Paul ventured to North-East United before joining Jamshedpur FC for the 2017-18 campaign, a period that would stand out as the pinnacle of his career. Clinching the Golden Glove in the 2017-18 season, he notched up an impressive seven clean sheets, the most in the league. With 50 saves, Paul secured the second spot for the most saves that season.

His stellar performance extended to statistical dominance, leading the league in save percentage with an impressive 77%, a feat remarkable among goalkeepers with at least eight appearances. Additionally, he stood second in the category of ball recoveries with 180 recoveries during that season. Although Jamshedpur FC fell short of entering the playoffs, Subrata Paul’s exceptional goalkeeping became the defining hallmark of their campaign, solidifying his status as a goalkeeping maestro in the realm of Indian football.
