Top 5 long serving foreign players in ISL memo

The Brazilian midfielder Emerson Moura, also known as Memo, made his mark in the ISL first with Delhi Dynamos in 2016. The team reached the semi-finals, and it also was the season in which players like Florent Malouda and Marcelinho were in fine form. A defensive midfielder, Memo was omnipresent in front of the defense preventing attacks and delivering key passes. He has a passing accuracy of 78.55 % in the ISL. He also helped his team with 3 goals and 3 assists.

The midfielder moved to Jamshedpur FC in 2017, forming a vital part of the team. He brought in much-needed experience to the side, which was making its debut in the ISL. Memo had played for various clubs in Brazil for around a decade before coming to the ISL. His versatility to play in the defense was helpful for Chennaiyin FC last season when they lacked backup in natural defenders. Memo has made 83 appearances in 5 seasons in the ISL.

1. Tiri (93 appearances)

Jose Luis Arroyo, also known as Tiri, tops the list for the most appearances by a foreign player in the ISL. The Spanish centre back played for the B teams of La Liga clubs Cadiz and Atletico Madrid before arriving in India. He was signed by defending champions ATK in 2015 when the club was still in ties with the La Liga club. He stood out for his team in his first season even though ATK failed to defend their title. He won his first and ATK’s second ISL title in 2016. In the 2017-18 season, he changed colours with newly joined Jamshedpur FC, where he became the captain and their main player.

The centre back turned out for Jamshedpur for 3 years before joining ATK Mohun Bagan ahead of the last season. This meant he would play in the ISL for six straight seasons. His formidable partnership with Sandesh Jhingan at the centre of the defense was one of the highlights of last season. With 93 appearances in over six seasons, Tiri is currently the longest-serving foreign player in the ISL.
