If you are an Indian football fan, 6th of August is special. On the 6th of August 2018, the Indian Under-20 side created history as they beat the mighty Argentina Under-20 side with 10 men. The 2-1 victory over the Argentine side in the COTIF Cup was 2 years ago but this remarkable feat by a young Indian side still fills up every Blue Pilgrim with pride. India had lost their previous two group stage encounter against Murcia and Mauritania and had managed to a goalless draw against Venezuela. India in their 3 games hadn’t managed to score a single goal and then it all changed on the 6th of August. A 4th minute headed goal by Deepak Tangri and a brilliant freekick by Anwar Ali saw India disturb the scorers for the first time and record an extraordinary victory over Lionel Scaloni and Pablo Aimar coached Argentina U-20 side. Here’s a look at the players of that iconic side and where they are now.
Prabshukhan Singh Gill who manned the Indian goal during has recently joined the Kerala Blasters on a two-year deal. Having played for the Indian Arrows in the I-League, Prabsukhan moved to the ISL after joining Bengaluru FC. Lack of opportunities at Bengaluru saw the young man switch to the Blasters for the upcoming 2020/21 season.
Asish Rai who predominantly plays as Right Back is equally capable of playing on the left side. A graduate from the FC Pune City youth academy, Asish played two seasons with the Indian Arrows on loan from Pune City. After the side from Pune got dissolved Asish joined Hyderabad FC and established himself as a regular starter for the side from Gachibowli. Asish’s performance in his maiden ISL season earned him a contract extension and he will be at the City of Nizam’s till 2023. Also following Ashis’ footsteps is fellow defender Sahil Panwar. Sahil too was part of the Pune City academy and the boy from Dehradun who can play anywhere across the back four has represented FC Pune City during the 18/19 season and has currently established himself as an integral part of Hyderabad FC.
Jitendra Singh who too was part of the Indian Arrows ranks as most young players of this generation for two seasons before joining Jamshedpur FC for the 2019/20 ISL season. With his ability to play as a holding midfielder as well as a Centre Back, Jitendra got chances in stops and starts last season and with rumours of changes in management at Jamshedpur floating around, his time to impress just might come this season. Anwar Ali, whose brilliant freekick against Argentina will probably go into Indian football folklore is currently struggling with a heart condition that has kept him away from the game. Anwar who is a Mumbai City player was one of the brightest young talents in Indian football. He impressed with his performances while playing for the Indian Arrows and even earned himself a mention in Igor Stimac’s list of probables for the senior national side, but missed out on making the cut due to injury.
Boris Singh currently plays football for ATK Mohun Bagan and had very few chances to show off his trove of talent. Before joining then ATK in 2019, Boris played two seasons in the I-League with the Arrows. Suresh Singh too spent two seasons in the I-League with the Indian Arrows before moving to Bengaluru to join Bengaluru FC. Suresh has got his fair share of chances to impress the Sree Kanteerava faithful and he has taken his opportunities with open arms and will be raring to go when next season rolls in. Deepak Tangri who scored the opener on the momentous occasion is currently a Marina Machan. Having played for the Arrows just like his peer, Deepak played for Chennaiyin last season but got very limited opportunities to showcase his capabilities.
Amarjit Singh currently part of the Jamshedpur FC roster has had two fruitful seasons in the I-League where he has found the back of the net on 6 occasions. While playing for the Red Miners last season the Manipuri has only been able to represent them 8 times but has recorded an assist to his name. Ninthoi Meetei whose corner was headed in for the opening goal by Deepak Tangri is a Highlander. Ninthoi who can play on both right and left of the midfield had a generous amount of chances to impress the North East United fans and has not disappointed much. He will be expecting more involvement in 2020/21 season. Aniket Jadhav who was sent off on 6th of August 2018 was playing as a sole striker up front. Aniket who had a trial at Blackburn Rovers is a Red Miner just like Amarjit. While Aniket is a striker he was mostly used as a Left Winger by Iriondo. Aniket did get his first ISL goal last season he will hoping there is more of where that came from.
