I-League club Sreenidhi FC is in advance talks to complete the signing of Gokulam Kerala FC’s defensive midfielder Mayakkannan and goalkeeper Ubaid CK. IFTWC has learned that the Gokulam Kerala duo is set to sign for the Andhra-based club , who are all set to debut in the 2021-22 I-League.
Mayakkannan was signed in 2019 by the Gokulam Kerala FC head coach Santiago Valera. The youngster was an integral part of the Gokulam setup and made 23 appearances over the two seasons. Mayakkannan played a vital role in the team’s midfield last season, which eventually helped Gokulam Kerala FC win the I-League trophy.
Ubaid CK had signed for Gokulam after two successful seasons with East Bengal in the I-League. The Kerala-born goalkeeper had been the first choice for Gokulam, making over 30 appearances in all competitions. The 31-year-old goalkeeper won the Durand Cup in his first season at the club and 2020-21 I-League the following year as the vice-captain of the Kozhikode-based club.
Founded in 2015, Andhra-based club Sreenidhi competed in the Hero Junior and Sub Junior League till 2020 and are all set to make their first appearance in the I-League. The club had also recently announced former Gokulam head coach Fernando Santiago Valera as their 2021-22 season manager.
Under Varela, who played a massive role in Mayakannan’s induction to the first team of Gokulam, the talented midfielder will hope to make a strong statement in the 2021-22 I-League season. Ubaid, meanwhile, will expect to have another good season in the I-League with his new club.
